Aptensio XR (methylphenidate ER)

Aptensio XR (methylphenidate hydrochloride) extended-release is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant.

It is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in people who are at least 6 years old.

What Are Side Effects of Aptensio XR?

Aptensio XR may cause serious side effects including:

• hives,
• difficulty breathing,
• swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat,
• coldness of fingers and toes,
• numbness or pain in the fingers and toes,
• skin color changes in the fingers and toes,
• unusual wounds on the fingers or toes,
• fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat,
• mood or behavior changes,
• agitation,
• aggression,
• mood swings,
• abnormal thoughts,
• thoughts of self-harm,
• uncontrolled muscle movements,
• twitching,
• shaking,
• sudden outbursts of words or sounds,
• vision changes,
• blurred vision,
• slow healing sores,
• ulcers on the tips of fingers or toes,
• fainting,
• seizure,
• chest, jaw, and left arm pain,
• shortness of breath,
• unusual sweating,
• weakness on one side of the body,
• slurred speech,
• sudden vision changes,
• confusion, and
• painful or prolonged erection lasting 4 or more hours

Get medical help right away, if you have any of the symptoms listed above.

Common side effects of Aptensio XR include:

• abdominal pain,
• fever,
• decreased appetite,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• headache,
• insomnia,
• dizziness, and
• rapid heart rate

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
• Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; and sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out;
• Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.

Dosage for Aptensio XR

The recommended starting dose of Aptensio XR for patients 6 years and above is 10 mg once daily with or without food in the morning. Dosage may be increased weekly in increments of 10 mg per day. Daily dosage above 60 mg is not recommended.

What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Aptensio XR?

Aptensio XR may interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Aptensio XR During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

During pregnancy, Aptensio XR should be used only if prescribed. Premature delivery and low birth weight infants have been reported in amphetamine-dependent mothers. Aptensio XR passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Withdrawal symptoms may occur if you suddenly stop taking Aptensio XR.
