Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) for Type 2 Diabetes | Injectable Diabetes Medication

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) is a prescription medication used for glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is prescribed alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar management. This injectable medication is available in two options: 4 vials (28-day supply) with syringes or 1 Kwikpen, for a total of 4 weeks’ use. Mounjaro combines the benefits of GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists in a single molecule to regulate blood sugar.

Mounjaro works by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas in response to glucose or nutrients, while also acting in the brain to regulate food intake. Additionally, it slows down stomach emptying, which helps patients feel full for longer, suppressing appetite and supporting weight loss.

In clinical trials, 75% to 90% of patients with an HbA1C starting between 7.9% and 8.6% achieved an HbA1C of less than 7% after 52 weeks of treatment, with or without other diabetes medications.

Dosage and Administration:

• How to Administer: Mounjaro is injected subcutaneously (under the skin) once a week, rotating between the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Always inject at approximately the same time each week.

• Dosage for Missed Injection: If you miss a dose, take it within three days. If more than three days have passed, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule.

• Combination with Insulin: If using insulin with Mounjaro, do not inject both medications in the same area.

Storage Instructions of Mounjaro :

• Refrigerate: Store Mounjaro in the refrigerator at 2-8°C (36-48°F). Do not freeze.

• Room Temperature: If necessary, Mounjaro can be kept at room temperature (not above 30°C/86°F) for up to 21 days.

• Dispose of After 21 Days: If left unrefrigerated for more than 21 days, dispose of the medication even if it is not expired.

Side Effects of Mounjaro :

While Mounjaro is generally well-tolerated, some patients may experience side effects such as:

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation

• Decreased appetite or stomach pain

• Headaches, dizziness, or indigestion

More serious side effects may include pancreatitis, hypoglycemia (when combined with insulin or other diabetes medications), thyroid tumors, and changes in vision. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Who Should Not Use Mounjaro:

• People with a history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome (MEN 2)

• Those with a history of severe pancreatitis

• Pregnant or breastfeeding women (limited safety data available)

Cautions:

• Mounjaro can increase the risk of dehydration in people with kidney issues. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

• Gallbladder problems, including symptoms like upper abdominal pain and yellowing skin, have been reported.
