How does Mariprist work

Medical abortion is the use of one or more medications to end an unwanted pregnancy. It is most effective when used early in the pregnancy and the process often resembles an early miscarriage.

Mariprist works to terminate early pregnancy through a 2-step process:

The mifepristone taken first, detaches the pregnancy from the uterus (womb) and makes the womb more receptive to misoprostol.
The misoprostol taken later works by causing contractions of the womb, and softens the cervix to allow the expulsion of the pregnancy.

When can Mariprist be used

How to prepare

Before using Mariprist we recommend that you find a private, comfortable space where you can lie down for a few hours. Have some painkillers and water handy, and if you’re able to, ask a close friend, partner or family member to stay with you. They can provide emotional support to you and help spot any warning signs.

It’s also a good idea to make a note of your nearest medical facility and how to get there. Serious complications are uncommon, but you should be prepared in case you do need to seek medical attention quickly.

Warning signs after using Mariprist

The side effects listed above are normal and serious complications are rare, but you should be aware of any warning signs that may require medical attention.

You should seek medical help immediately if you have any of these symptoms:

Severe bleeding – this means you are soaking through 2 or more large sanitary pads per hour for 2 hours in a row after taking misoprostol
No bleeding or very light bleeding 24-48 hours after taking misoprostol
High fever – more than 38° and/or lasting for more than 24 hours
Severe and increasing abdominal pain – if this doesn’t lessen after taking painkillers, or occurs over 24 hours after taking misoprostol
Foul smelling vaginal discharge
Significantly distended abdomen (bloating)
Severe and persistent vomiting or diarrhoea
Feeling very sick, with or without fever
