Double-Blind Study

A study done by the Department of Oral Medical and Surgical Sciences at the University of British Columbia compared the numbing effects of lidocaine five-hitter and Emla cream. in the study, researchers applied the creams to patients’ mouths then measured the depth of painless probing within the premolar region.

Patients who received lidocaine five-hitter experienced painless probing for 1.9 mm. However, patients who got Emla cream didn’t experience pain till a depth of 2.8 mm.
