How Biktarvy Works
Biktarvy works by reducing the amount of HIV in the blood (viral load) and helping strengthen the immune system. By suppressing HIV replication, it helps delay the progression of HIV infection to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and lowers the risk of HIV-related complications.
Who Can Use Biktarvy
- Adults and children weighing 25 kg or more
- Patients new to HIV treatment
- Patients switching from another HIV regimen, if medically appropriate
Biktarvy does not cure HIV or AIDS and does not prevent transmission of HIV to others.
Dosage & Administration
Biktarvy is taken once daily as a single tablet, with or without food, exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
- Standard adult dose: 50 mg bictegravir / 200 mg emtricitabine / 25 mg tenofovir alafenamide
- Lower-strength tablets are available for certain pediatric patients
Important Safety Information
Biktarvy should only be used under medical supervision. Regular blood and kidney function tests may be required during treatment.
- Not recommended in patients with severe kidney or liver disease
- May worsen hepatitis B infection if treatment is stopped suddenly
- Drug interactions may occur with certain anticonvulsants, antibiotics, and herbal products such as St. John’s Wort
Side Effects
Common side effects may include headache, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, or abnormal laboratory test results. Serious side effects are rare but require immediate medical attention.
