DESOXYN 5 MG

DESOXYN® 5 mg tablets contain methamphetamine hydrochloride, a potent central nervous system (CNS) stimulant of the amphetamine class prescribed for Attention‑Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children (≥ 6 years) and adults when clinically appropriate. It may also be used in some indications for obesity under strict clinical guidance.

Active Ingredient:

• Methamphetamine Hydrochloride 5 mg (USP) — a sympathomimetic amine with stimulant properties that enhance attention, decrease impulsivity, and reduce hyperactivity in ADHD patients.

Mechanism of Action:
Methamphetamine increases the release of catecholamines (dopamine and norepinephrine) and inhibits their reuptake, resulting in enhanced signaling in areas of the brain associated with focus, alertness, and behavior regulation.

Indications:

• ADHD: Approved to improve attention span, reduce distractibility, and manage behavioral symptoms in pediatric and adult patients as part of a comprehensive treatment program.

• Obesity (off‑label or specialized programs): In selected cases when alternative therapies have been ineffective.

Dosage & Administration:

• Typical starting dose: 5 mg once or twice daily, usually in the morning and early afternoon to reduce insomnia risk.

• Titration: Dose may be increased in 5 mg increments weekly based on clinical response; usual effective total is often 20 – 25 mg/day divided into two doses.

Safety & Warnings:

• Controlled Substance (CII): Methamphetamine is a Schedule II drug due to high potential for abuse, misuse, dependence, and addiction.

• Cardiovascular Risks: Can raise blood pressure and heart rate; monitor patients with heart disease or hypertension.

• Psychiatric Effects: May exacerbate anxiety, agitation, aggression, or precipitate psychotic symptoms in some patients.

• Peripheral Vasculopathy: Rare but serious circulation issues (e.g., Raynaud’s phenomenon) have been associated with stimulant therapy.

Common Side Effects:

• Insomnia, decreased appetite, weight loss

• Dry mouth, headache, tremors, rapid heartbeat

• Nervousness or irritability

Precautions:

• Avoid late‑day dosing to minimize sleep interference.

• Assess cardiovascular status before prescribing.
