Medication Description of Doxycycline

Doxycycline hyclate is an oral tetracycline-class antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections, including chlamydia and, in some cases, gonorrhea.

These two infections often occur together, making doxycycline an important treatment option for both when used under medical supervision. Doxycycline works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, preventing the growth and spread of bacteria.

For chlamydia, the standard regimen is 100 mg by mouth twice daily for 7 days. It is important to complete the entire course, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication. Skipping doses or stopping early can result in persistent infection or resistance.

How to Use:

• Typically used twice daily for 7 days
• Swallow with a full glass of water; avoid lying down immediately after taking
• Take with food if stomach upset occurs (but avoid dairy close to dosing)

Warnings:

• Avoid taking with antacids or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum, or iron within 2 hours of dosing
• Increased sun sensitivity may occur—use sun protection
• May reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control—consider backup contraception during treatment
• Do not use in pregnant individuals unless specifically directed by a provider

Side Effects of Doxycycline

Side effects may include diarrhea, upset stomach, vomiting, loss of appetite, sun sensitivity and esophagitis.
