These items are often packaged in sleek, professional-looking boxes, but what’s inside can be dangerous and untested.

A report from Illinois and Wisconsin public health departments, along with the CDC, revealed that many of these products are part of a gray or black market. “Dank Vapes appears to be the most prominent in a category of largely counterfeit manufacturers,” the report stated. The packaging is readily available online and used by distributors with no centralized production process.

In some tested TKO THC vape cartridges, researchers found harmful substances including vitamin E acetate—a thickening agent strongly linked to lung injury—as well as pesticides and other contaminants not listed on the packaging. These findings highlight the dangers of using unlicensed THC vape products.

To protect yourself, always buy from licensed dispensaries with lab-tested products. Avoid any vape cartridge that lacks clear labeling, verifiable lab results, or appears suspiciously cheap. If the source isn’t trusted, it’s not worth the risk.
