Stelara

Product Information:

Stelara is a biologic medication used to treat certain autoimmune conditions by targeting interleukins IL-12 and IL-23, which are proteins that cause inflammation. By blocking these proteins, Stelara reduces overactive immune responses.

Uses:

• Plaque psoriasis (moderate to severe)

• Psoriatic arthritis

• Crohn’s disease

• Ulcerative colitis

How to Take Stelara:

• Form: Injectable (subcutaneous) or intravenous (IV) depending on the condition.

• Dosing (subcutaneous for psoriasis):

  • Weight-based dose for first injection at week 0, second at week 4, then every 12 weeks.

  • For Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis, IV induction is usually given at weeks 0 and 8, then subcutaneous maintenance every 8 or 12 weeks.

• Administration:

  • Subcutaneous injections are usually done in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm.

  • Can be self-administered at home after training.

• Monitoring: Your doctor may check blood tests and screen for infections before starting treatment.

Warnings:

1. Infections: Can increase risk of serious infections (tuberculosis, bacterial infections, fungal infections). Screen for TB before starting.

2. Cancer risk: Long-term immune suppression may slightly increase risk of certain cancers.

3. Allergic reactions: Rare but possible during or after injection.

4. Vaccines: Avoid live vaccines during treatment.

5. Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed; discuss with your doctor.

Side Effects:

• Upper respiratory infections (cold, sinus infections)

• Headache

• Fatigue

• Injection site reactions (redness, pain, swelling)

• Nausea

• Diarrhea

Serious but rare:

• Severe infections

• Allergic reactions

• Liver problems
